Separated At Birth, Identical Triplets Uncover The Real Reason Why
Separated At Birth, Identical Triplets Uncover The Real Reason Why
Three identical 19-year-old men who never met before, discover they’re triplets who were separated at birth. Looking for answers, they uncover a web of secrets and deceit beyond anything they could have possibly imagined.
Taken for someone else
Robert Shafran had the most unusual first day at college. Upon his arrival on Sullivan County Community College he was pleasantly surprised with the way everyone seemed to treat him. He felt felt beyond welcome, it was almost as if people here already knew him. When girls began kissing him, asking him how he had been and calling him Eddy, he was sure he was being mistaken by someone else who bore a strong resemblance to him. The notion was dispelled by his new room mate however. He did not just look a bit like some other student there, he looked exactly like this other student.
Meeting someone like you
Michael Domitz, his new roommate cannot believe his eyes. The man standing right in front of him is exactly like his previous roommate. Things got even weirder when he learnt his birthday. This man was born the same day as his old room mate as well. In lieu of all this, he arranged for them to meet.
They just might be twins
When Robert and Eddy were introduced they stared at each other in disbelief. It was like being in front of a mirror. They really did look exactly alike and they were born the same day. After the initial shock they started talking and discovered they also had the same IQ score and the same birthmarks. They were also adopted children who never met their biological parents. Considering all this, they concluded they might just be brothers.
DNA leaves no doubts
After taking the DNA test, they had to wait for the results. They agreed on taking it easy until then. After all, the possibility of being completely unrelated to each other though did exist. When the results arrived confirming their suspicions both brothers were overcome with joy.
Not twins but triplets
The story became a sensation on campus and when the local newspaper got a hold of it they published it and another man by the name of David Kellman proclaimed he also looked exactly like them and had the same birthdate. A separate DNA test revealed they were actually triplets.
The triplets open a Restaurant together
No one can deny that learning about a brother you didn’t know about can be daunting to say the least. But learning about two brothers who look exactly like you and were born the same day? These triplets had a lot to talk about and their lives would never be the same.It was very exciting though, they just needed time to adjust to the idea.
Once the DNA-proven triplets’ story got out it became an immediate media sensation not just locally but nationwide.
They were interviewed by the likes of Phil Donahue and Tom Brokaw and it felt nice to be on the spotlight for a while. After the excitement faded, the triplets begun looking for answers.
As it was only natural, the triplets formed an incredibly tight bond in a very short amount of time. It was as if all of the sudden they had to make up for all the years they spent apart. As time passed they learnt more about themselves and found out there were even more similarities than they thought possible. They all smoked the same brand, loved the same italian food and even shared a preference for older women.
Their popularity showed no signs of abatement. They were featured on talk shows, magazines and news outlets. The most exclusive nightclubs were happy to have them and they became regulars of Studio 54 and the Copacabana. Their fame simply opened doors so they decided to open a Steakhouse. The triplets named it “Triplet’s Old New York Steakhouse” and it was located in Manhattan, NYC. The restaurant was an immediate success partly due to their fame and partly because it served good steak.
Questions that remain unanswered
The only thing bugging them, was the myriad questions that despite all the fame and popularity remained unanswered. When exactly were they separated? Why were they separated to begin with? After talking with their adoptive parents and finding out they hadn’t the least idea they even had brothers, let alone that they were triplets, they all went together to the adoption agency where the three of them were given for adoption and subsequently separated and assigned to different parents. They begun searching for answers and learnt that they weren’t born triplets but rather quadruplets and the fourth baby was sadly stillborn. They knew their adoption was handled by Louise Wise Services, the best known adoption agency of New York in the 1980s. Accompanied by their parents they all went to knock on their door to get some answers and received none. When they were leaving one of the parents went back inside to look for his umbrella and he saw that the senior administrators who had just told them nothing were opening a bottle of champagne. He found it very odd and when he told everyone else they concluded something was up. They were definitively celebrating something and it really smelled fishy. The triplets learnt from their parents not just that they ignored the fact they had any brothers but that they were all part of a development study. They had all been visited regularly for over 10 years who administered them behavioral tests. They had all shown signs of separation anxiety as children.
The inhumane experiment
It was author and journalist Lawrence Wright, who whilst doing research for a book about twins learnt that a psychological study to find out if the development of a person was determined by its DNA or like experience. Wright found out that the Louise Wise adoption agency provided the subjects for the study and the triplets had been part of this study all along.
A striking similarity with Nazi experiments
It has always been considered immoral to keep siblings apart. That is why all the studies that had been conducted about the subject above had been conducted on adult subjects when they were adults already. This was the first study that documented the lives of siblings who had always been kept apart. The doctor who ran the study was a WWII refugee from Austria called Peter Neubauer and the whole experiment bore a striking resemblance to studies carried out by the Nazis during the war.
What the study meant for them as children
They were all too young to remember anything about each other, but the separation caused left its mark into adulthood. David Kellman’s mother, Claire remembered that as a child Dave would often talk about a brother whom for lack of knowledge was deemed imaginary. The rest of the parents followed suit, sharing similar experiences about their own sons.
The darkness took Eddy over
Eddy commited suicide. He was 33 when he passed. Suicidal thoughts are amongst the many known consequences for twins and triplets separated at birth. These effects are well documented and in some instances they’re even felt within hours by the other siblings. David and Robert are still looking for compensation from the Jewish Board, that is responsible for the Louise Wise Adoption Services.
There are more…
The study for which the Louise Wise Adoption Services provided human subjects, separated hundreds of siblings who might never find out they have brothers or sisters who surely feel someone missing in their lives whom they haven’t met. In January 2018 the documentary “Three identical strangers” made its debut on the Sundance Festival. It should raise the awareness of the Jewish Board who should take responsibility for the inhumane experiment.
